Like many people, I’m still reeling from the nasty and divisive election. 2016 felt to me like an upsurge in ugliness and racism. *sigh* First it made me crushingly sad. Then I felt outrage at the barrage of hate and ignorance. But now I’m feeling determination. It’s up to all of us to create the world that we leave our children - and we have so much work to do.
I believe that most of the Demanding Joy community is similarly open-minded, so I won’t pontificate about the benefits of diversity and inclusion. Bottom line: ignorance, fear, violence, bigotry, and hate suck. They never solved any problem and make our world worse for everyone. Conversely, respect, community, peace, diversity, love, compassion, and justice are not just great things, but critical for the health and success of society. Duh.
I personally believe that every single problem can be solved with the correct ratio of knowledge, compassion, and action.
I also believe that we’re all on this boat together - we all rise or sink together. So let’s take action. I am issuing a challenge to the Demanding Joy community. It’s easy.
When you see or meet someone who is not like you in some way,
smile and say “hello.”
Then see what happens. And then tell us about it. We want to hear your stories about what happened to you when you introduced yourself to someone or something new to broaden your social circle and your horizons. We want to share some inspiration about the beauty of the human race to counteract the barrage of meanness to which we have all become accustomed.
Please send us your thoughts and stories to firstname.lastname@example.org. We want to create a conversation. We can’t let the haters win, so let’s stir up some love.
Go team! -
